Reflection
This year, the media and communication course included a lot of in-class or off-class projects. These projects were designed to encourage collaboration, creativity, and hands-on learning, providing students with real-world scenarios to apply their theoretical knowledge.
Media Creation
The media project that best showcases my creativity is AT2, the movie poster. As someone who enjoys watching films and TV series in my free time, I’ve always been fascinated by the diversity of genres and how they market themselves in unique ways. During one of the lectures, I learned that historical contexts can unconsciously influence movie genre trends, which further piqued my interest in analyzing film elements. In my poster, I focused on creating an atmosphere that matched the storyline through thoughtful use of colour, symbolism, and composition. My curiosity about the wide variety of movie genres inspired me to deeply analyze the elements of a movie poster. I focused on creating an atmosphere that aligns the storyline with visual art. For instance, using warm and comfortable colors helped to highlight the narrative and convey the film’s location. One of my favorite aspects of the poster is the old man holding a poisoned apple pie, a pivotal figure in the story. Additionally, my creativity is reflected in the tagline: “An apple once a day keeps the enemy away.” This playful twist on the original proverb, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” adds humor and perfectly matches the comedic tone of a Disney-inspired film. Looking back, if I were to revisit this project, I’d consider reducing my reliance on AI tools. Instead, I’d experiment with other methods, such as painting or using a doodling brush, to create a more personal and handcrafted feel to the poster. In the future, I look forward to having another opportunity to create a project like this. This time, I would ensure my creative choices stay consistent with the genre I’ve selected, further refining my skills and bringing my vision to life.
Personal Growth
Secondly, talking about the personal growth I learned. The challenges I faced in Media & Communications this year can break down into many parts. The first one is collaborating with classmates. While everyone in class came from different countries, there are always some misunderstandings in language delivery or cultural differences. It occurred on time management and how to solve problems. Fortunately, in spite of our co-operation happening online, sometimes we communicated with each other with difficulty, overall my projects were finished wonderfully. The experience I worked with made me advance my skills of liaison and I also received some precious friendship and it is the other personal growth I hold during the class. It also taught me the value of adaptability in diverse environments. Working closely with individuals from different backgrounds and perspectives allowed me to embrace flexibility and find innovative solutions to challenges, enhancing not only my personal growth but also my ability to thrive in dynamic, ever-changing scenarios.
Media Consumption & Understanding
Over the course of this year, as I accomplished numerous goals, my perspective on media and communication has undergone a profound and transformative shift. From the very first class, my understanding of the media world has expanded far beyond my initial perception. What I once thought of as a narrow field has revealed itself to be vast and multifaceted. Through exploring photography, designing posters, and delving into podcast production, I discovered that media is not limited to just visual or audio formats. It encompasses traditional media as well as the rapidly evolving modern landscape, blending creativity, strategy, and innovation. In the first semester, I gained valuable knowledge about lighting, composition, shadowing, marketing strategies, and even the finer details of creating a compelling movie poster. The newsroom project encouraged us to take seemingly small details and transform them into broader, meaningful narratives. I also learned how media influences people in profound ways, making reality more engaging and even more entertaining through its many forms.
In conclusion, Media and Communication is my favorite subject and it is not because I am doing the portfolio. The features of constantly changing and the concept of willing to engage the activities together always make me full of motivation to walk through all the paths which lead to a different future. Another key reason why media and communication amusing me is its incredible power to shape perspectives and create meaningful connections. It’s not just about understanding how information is shared, but preparing me to navigate and shape the diverse media landscapes of the future.
